HOUSTON – In honor of Asian American and Pacific Islander heritage month Houston Life is highlighting two talented local designers whose work is being showcased this weekend at the ASCEND AAPI Spring fashion show, Anthony Pabillano and Tina Zulu.
Anthony Pabillano is a Houston-based Filipino artist and accessories designer who currently explores weaving in the style of the Philippine bayong, a traditional bag made from dried leaves. Pabillano is redefining these bags through his use of unexpected materials and forms and turning them into chic handbags.
Tina Zulu is a Filipina-American stylist and designer known for her collection of reimagined vintage Japanese kimonos she creates through artist collaborations.
Zulu and designer Chloe Dao will be headlining ASCEND AAPI Spring fashion show, and Pabillano will be providing handbags made specifically for this show to complement Zulu and Dao’s looks.
This immersive experience celebrates Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month and will be happening Saturday, May 20th at 2 pm at the Houston Public Library’s Julia Ideson Building. This event is free and open to the public but registration is required. You can do so, here.

Tina Zulu’s pieces will be available online at kimonozulu.com or by appointment at their showroom in Upper Kirby.
Anthony Pabillano’s bags will be available at the event and through his website and Instagram.
